Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to run electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station must not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never permit items like for example lighters or matches to be used while an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place properly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
