Forklift Battery Safe Installation and Charging
Forklift batteries are pretty big and are really costly pieces of machines. They weigh thousands of pounds. The task of charging and installing these batteries is something that should be really planned out in advanced in order to make sure that these methods are able to be completed properly and safely. Maintaining a sound charging procedure and correct handling could really increase the regular lifespan of a battery.
Standard Charging
It is recommended that the battery is not connected to the charger until it is at or less than 20 percent capacity. By charging the battery when it is higher than 20 percent, the lifespan of the battery can really be shortened. On approximately each 5th charge cycle, the charger should be set on the weekend or equalize setting, depending on which model of charger you are utilizing.
The charging cycle should never be interrupted. Once the charge cycle is done, you should avoid using the battery for some hours. By practicing these methods, you can help ensure that you get the maximum battery performance available.
Charger Maintenance
Be sure to have the charger turned off when in the process of hooking up the battery to the charger. Connect the charger to the battery and not the lift truck. This is a common error which can inadvertently cause damage to both the charger and the forklift. In addition, it is very vital that the amperage of the battery must match that of the charger.
Do not ever allow the battery to deep discharge or completely discharge. This will shorten the battery life greatly and can even prevent the charger from being able to start. If the battery charger reads that there is no battery activity, it will not start the charge cycle. If this situation occurs, a technician will need to be called to be able to re-set the charger prior to charge being able to begin.
