Fuel Storage
The smaller fuel canisters and bigger refueling tanks should be stored in a different complex or building in order to be more safe. To add more safety, all areas in the vicinity must have "No Smoking" signs are prominently displayed. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which can just be accessed by authorized personnel. It is vital for the operator's safety, and everybody they work with, that these safety measures are strictly complied with.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This job could utilize retraining systems such as concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods could be used. It is also vital to have a fire extinguisher nearby at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station must be trained and also should be trained to safely and effectively use the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The OSHA or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration require that everybody who is operating an industrial powered forklift or lift truck is trained properly. This training covers both the hands-on training as well as the classroom portion. After finishing the training session, the person should be tested to be able to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the proper way of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves site-specific procedures as well as the precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they could be driving.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS must be situated in all facilities where lift trucks are operating. This center would include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals which are used on site. This would also cover the propane that is used to refuel the unit, along with the acid in the forklift battery.
The MSDSs sheets are required to be available to all personnel at all times. For instance, if an exposure incident happens, the person has to be evaluated immediately. If any medical attention is required, to must be given without any delay. Normally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is considered necessary, as a general rule; have the injury examined by a medical professional if you really believe it is severe. Always better to be safe than sorry.
